Morten's run Long distance running and orienteering may be my greatest passion. In primary school I hated sports. I was miserable doing any of them, and I was always among the last kids to be selected for a sports team. But then a miracle happened.
I spent my youth and found my friends running and orienteering. 20 years old, in 1987, I completed a half marathon in 1.14.34 and a 10 km race in 34.14. I also wrote a book on the joy of running: "Løb - i takt med dig selv" / "Run - At Your Own Pace" (only available here in Danish, sorry!). It was published in 1989 and sold 2000 copies. I had the opportunity of training with elite runners and orienteers, and I found that I was not motivated to put in the effort of training twice a day to improve even more. After more than fifteen years of studies, work and establishing a family in Copenhagen, I got almost ideal training conditions again in 2004, when I moved to Soroe. Soroe has an orienteering club, OK Soroe, a runners club,PGI Motion, and a more unofficial runners club based on a mailing list: "the club which is not a club". I ran Berlin Marathon 2005 in 3.27.16 to beat my old PB. In 2009 I had a fine season of training and did my last decent 10 km in 37.19. My need challenges and an aging body mean that I have become an orienteer. Here, running goes through the terrain, and navigation and planning ahead is neccesary. I need to do strength training, stretching, cycling, roller skiing and swinning because my legs no longer tolerate my previous training volume and pace. The goal of my training therefore is to continue orienteering in the woods even as an old man. Morten Hass |
